VCS! AmeriCorps Mission

Viva Bien, Coma Bien, Sientase Bien! Program’s mission is to work towards the day when every family in the Hayward community has a healthy lifestyle. VCS! Focuses on two primary areas: nutrition and fitness. Through extraordinary attention to children in the after-school program, VCS! inspires families to live right, eat right, and feel right.

Hayward Unified School District’s AmeriCorps grant program, titled “Viva Bien, Coma Bien, Siéntase Bien (VCS),” is focused on improving health and fitness for families within a school-based delivery system. Students in 20 Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) elementary schools will be assisted by 40 AmeriCorps members, including a Youth/Health and Fitness Advocate at each of HUSD’s after-school Youth Enrichment Program (YEP) sites.  HUSD’s objectives for VCS adhere to national performance measures under the Health Priority Area.  Objectives include;  1) students rated as deficient in healthy living patterns improving into the “healthy living zone,” and 2) students assessed as physically unfit achieving physical fitness by the end of the school year.
