After-school Professionals Appreciation Week
Posted 4/24/18

April 23-27, 2018 is National Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week. The Hayward Unified School District employs nearly 200 after-school professionals to serve the approximately 7,000 students enrolled in morning and afternoon programs through the Youth Enrichment Program (YEP). After-school programs are vital for families as they provide academic support and enrichment and physical activities in an environment that is safe, secure, and supportive.

Last week, YEP management rolled out the red carpet—quite literallyand held a celebration for after-school staff to recognize their service and commitment to HUSD students and families. Carmen Garcia was one of the staff members acknowledged at the  April 17th ceremony organized by YEP administrators. She has worked in various capacities at Glassbrook Elementary for 24 years18 of those years as a Site Leader with YEP. “It’s rewarding when you see the progress in students,” said Garcia. “Most of our parents have to work and they rely on YEP to support their children academically,” she added.

HUSD is unique amongst other school districts in that all of its after-school staff is hired directly by the district. As HUSD employees, after-school professionals are able to seamlessly align their program goals to those of the district. They also have the opportunity to work directly with school site and district staff. This is beneficial for both staff and students. YEP also offers popular programs, such as Middle College, which allows middle school students the opportunity to earn college credit.

Back at Glassbrook Elementary, Carmen oversees YEP staff who enrich students’ academic experience with art projects, theater, and read-alouds. She proudly displayed artwork created by her students, the result of an activity to build a habitat for an animal they’d selected by using unconventional supplies, in an effort to spark the students’ creative side.

YEP will begin enrolling students for the 2018-19 school year on April 30, 2018. For more information on how and when to enroll, parents should visit the YEP homepage. Registration for YEP’s summer program for elementary and middle school is currently open.  Program and registration information is also listed on the YEP homepage.
