Posted 12/20/19

Distinguished School LogoHayward, CA—Southgate Elementary was recognized by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond as one of the 323 elementary schools across the state to be honored under the 2020 California Distinguished Schools Award Program.

Sponsored by the California Department of Education, the program recognizes outstanding education programs and practices. In 2020, schools were recognized for closing the achievement gap and for exceptional student performance.

“These outstanding schools don’t just educate students; they also provide the young people of California the tools they need to be successful after graduation,” said State Superintendent Tony Thurmond.

The Distinguished Schools program recognizes schools based on performance and progress on indicators that include test scores, suspension rates, and school climate. Southgate Elementary has achieved great success through a strong collaboration between teachers and families. Together, they are working to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Southgate Elementary, along with the other Distinguished School awardees, will be honored at an awards ceremony on February 10, 2020. Congratulations to the Southgate community.
