Cesar Chavez Day holiday was established in 2000 to honor the life and legacy of labor leader Cesar

E. Chavez. California Volunteers administers the Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning program which includes the playground building effort, as well as the formation of afterschool service

clubs and curriculum development to integrate lessons regarding Chavez’s life into school day and

afterschool activities.

 

On May 31st, 2011 Cesar Chavez day VCS! AmeriCorps members gave back and dedicated a day to cleaning the Sorensdale Disability Center garden. Members worked along the side of Shelly Luchini, HARDS Recreation Coordinator of the Special Needs Program and YEP site Coordinator Juan Gonzales.

 

VCS! AmeriCorps is scheduled to conduct its second service at Chavez Middle School on May 7th, 2011.

Friday April 8th, 2011

Angela and Barbara, Strobridge and Longwood P.E. teachers are coming back this Friday to conduct training. They will focus on teaching YHA’s engaging games that help build students ability to perform well on the post-physical fitness test. Members will learn warm ups and two different ways to keep students engaged for up to 60 minutes at a time. Please remember to wear sneakers and comfortable clothes as we will be engaging in physical activities.

 

Friday April 15th

In an effort to comply with our YEP Site Coordinators feedback, Project Eat, will be providing us with a garden and nutrition training. Here members will learn how to incorporate lessons that include nutrition and gardening activities and how they can connect.

Due to YEP enrollment the cooking class scheduled for April 13th will be moved to April 20th, 2011. Flyers for the remaining cooking classes will be distributed through district mail by this Friday April 8th, 2011.

 

Members will cook two Wednesday in a row (April 20th and 27th, 2011) to make up for the missed day. Please plan to pick up food at SIAC on Tuesday April 19th in room # 3 between 12pm and 3pm.

 

Members will focus on making  bean tostadas with the students. Members will begin recruiting parents  to participate in the cooking activity to help up make our volunteer recruiting goals for the year.

 

Note: If a parent sign’s up and participates YHA members are required to inform the volunteer recruiters for documentation purposes.

Pre-Physical Fitness testing

VCS! Member of the Month

Congratulations members on your hard work with data collection and pre-physical fitness testing. YHA’s completed a total of 1002 pre-physical fitness test at 20 different sites. Currently the data is being reviewed by HTA and results our “high need” students will be in by April 15th, 2011. Please continue to motivate students to practice physical exercises to help strengthen their chances to pass the Post-test. Post-Test will be conducted in late May.

This month VCS! AmeriCorps has selected Brenda Gardeno from Southgate Elementary for the month of April. Brenda has shown extreme dedication and always goes above and beyond her AmeriCorps duties. She is always willing to help and has been a lead helper on the cooking bag distribution days. Brenda has been a model AmeriCorps members and is always finding ways to earn additional hours.
