Equity and Anti-Bias/Anti-Racism (AB/AR)

Student Leaders for Equity and Antiracism flyer

The Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) is committed to establishing and sustaining a community that shares a collective responsibility to recognize, interrupt, dismantle, and eliminate actions. decisions, and outcomes that result from and perpetuate racism. HUSD rejects all forms of racism as destructive to its mission of educational equity. We make this commitment as part of our strategic plan to develop life-long learners supported by inequitable and engaging learning environments that draw upon our community’s rich diversity. We have promoted culturally and linguistically responsive educational practices, yet race continues to be the most persistent predictor of student performance. Race matters as we pursue our goal of eliminating disproportionate student outcomes. To that end, we have systematically detailed a more comprehensive approach to anti-bias and antiracist work in our pursuit of educational equity for all as embodied in the board policies on equity and anti-racism.

HUSD Teaching for Black Lives Study Group

Book study groups promote conversations among teachers and school staff that lead to the application of new ideas in classrooms and improvement of existing skills. It is a great way to focus on issues related to school change and also helps to build community in schools. For two years, the HUSD Teaching for Black Lives Study Group has done just that and was recently visited and later featured by Zinn Education and Rethinking Schools on their website.

See spotlight story about our study group on the T4BL website!
