The California Department of Education invites you to attend the 2023 Interim and Formative Assessment Training Series. Registration is now available!

This engaging training series will provide direct, online training focused on leveraging the interim and formative components of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) comprehensive system of assessments to inform teaching and learning. It is designed for teachers, instructional coaches, and educators on special assignment, but local educational agency (LEA) test coordinators and administrators may also find this training series useful to further support educators.

The 2023 Interim and Formative Assessment Training Series will be comprised of three distinct, independent modules with multiple opportunities to attend. Module 1 and Module 2 apply to Smarter Balanced, CAST, and ELPAC assessments collectively, while Module 3 includes separate hand scoring sessions tailored to each assessment. Sessions offered in summer 2023 include:

Module 1: Using the Formative Assessment Process and Tools for Teachers Website to Boost Instruction

• What: Deep dive into formative assessment practices and resources, including an exploration of the Tools for Teachers website
• When: 1 to 3:30 p.m. on the following dates:
  • Monday, July 10, 2023
  • Monday, July 17, 2023

Module 2: Gauging Student Progress with the CAASPP and ELPAC Interim Assessments

• What: Deep dive into the CAASPP and ELPAC interim assessments and associated online systems and how to use these resources to support teaching and learning
• When: 1 to 3:30 p.m. on the following dates:
  • Wednesday, July 12, 2023
  • Wednesday, July 19, 2023

Module 3A: Interim Assessment Hand Scoring—English Language Arts/Literacy

• What: In-depth instruction and practice in hand scoring interim assessments for Smarter Balanced English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA)
• When: 8:30 a.m. to noon on the following dates:
  • Monday, July 24, 2023
  • Monday, August 7, 2023

Module 3B: Interim Assessment Hand Scoring—Mathematics

• What: In-depth instruction and practice in hand scoring interim assessments for Smarter Balanced mathematics
• When: 8:30 a.m. to noon on the following dates:
  • Wednesday, July 26, 2023
  • Wednesday, August 9, 2023

Additional sessions for each of the three modules will be offered in fall 2023, including CAST and ELPAC Interim Assessment hand scoring sessions. Look for more information later this year.
