The HUSD Fatherhood Initiative
Nine years ago the Hayward Unified School District started the initiative to intentionally involve fathers in schools through an event called the Million Father March. The Million Fathers March (MFM) is an opportunity for dads, uncles, grandfathers, coaches, mentors, clergy, men’s groups, and organizations to show their commitment to the educational lives of their children throughout the school year by escorting children to school on this day.
Today the district is working to expand resources and support to fathers through a number of workshops, events, and programs. In November 2018 the district started with a 12-week R3 Fatherhood Class a partnership program with Healthy Relationships California. A new class series will begin in March at Winton Middle School.
The district has also teamed up with La Familia and First 5 Father Corps to train male staff and Parent Ambassadors to attend a series of train the trainer workshops. The group of fathers will kick off a new Cafe Dad drop-in opportunity at the Parent Resource Center HUB starting in mid-March 2019.
Working to uplift fathers and families!
