The HUSD Board of Education held a special meeting on November 17 to discuss and take action on the recommendations for school closures and changes to boundaries and programs. The following is a summary of the board’s decision.

You’ll find that the school board voted to only take action and approve the recommendations for Year 1 (2022-23). All other proposed closures and relocations have been tabled. Trustees recognized that the district does have long-term challenges to address, but they wanted to take more time to continue to explore solutions with the community. 

We know that this is difficult news to hear for our Strobridge and Bowman communities. These schools have built a special sense of community that they will surely carry with them to their new learning environments. I’m confident that we will pull together to offer the support students, families, and staff will need during this transition period. Strobridge, Bowman, and preschool families of children that will be relocating from SIAC and the HUB will receive additional information soon with more details about the immediate next steps. We look forward to the opportunity to bring our students together into new spaces with familiar friends and faces. 

What’s next?

With the school board’s vote regarding recommended changes, HUSD will work to update the current elementary school boundary map. Those changes also take into account the input we received from the community through surveys and town hall meetings.

• Dec 9, 2021-January: HUSD will communicate with the community about changes ahead of open enrollment and the inter-district transfer period.

La Mesa Directiva de HUSD tuvo una reunión especial el 17 de noviembre para discutir y tomar acción sobre las recomendaciones para el cierre de escuelas y cambios en los límites y programas. El siguiente es un resumen de la decisión que tomaron.

La mesa directiva votó solo para tomar medidas y aprobar las recomendaciones para el año 1 (2022-23 ). Todos los demás cierres y reubicaciones que se encontraban en las propuestas revisiones se han pospuesto. Los miembros de la mesa directiva reconocieron que el distrito tiene desafíos a largo plazo que abordar, pero querían tomarse más tiempo para continuar explorando soluciones con la comunidad. 

Sabemos que es una noticia difícil de escuchar para nuestras comunidades de Strobridge y Bowman. Estas escuelas han creado un ambiente especial que de seguro los seguirá a sus nuevas escuelas. Estoy seguro de que nos uniremos para ofrecer el apoyo que los estudiantes, las familias y el personal necesitarán durante este período de transición. Las familias de Strobridge, Bowman, y de los estudiantes preescolares que se reubicarán de SIAC y del Centro de Recursos para Padres recibirán más información con detalles sobre cuáles son los próximos pasos. Esta es una oportunidad para dar la bienvenida a los estudiantes a nuevos espacios con amigos y rostros familiares. 

¿Que sigue?

Con el voto de la mesa directiva, HUSD trabajará para actualizar los mapas actuales de los límites de las escuelas primarias. Esos cambios también toman en cuenta los comentarios que recibimos de la comunidad a través de encuestas y reuniones públicas. 

• Dec 8, 2021: La Mesa Directiva de Educación de HUSD discutirá y tomará acción sobre los cambios en el mapa de límites.

• Dec 9, 2021-Enero: HUSD se comunicará con la comunidad sobre los cambios antes del período de transferencia.
