New Cherryland Elementary to open in 2019-20
Posted 9/27/18

New Cherryland Elementary renderingHayward, CA— School board members, community leaders, parents, and staff toured the new Cherryland Elementary School being constructed on the site of the former Sunset High School, between Sunset Boulevard and Laurel Avenue in Hayward. Construction began in January 2018 and is expected to be completed by June 2019, in time for the start of the 2019-20 school year. The new campus will include transitional kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms, a library/media center, and an outdoor amphitheater.

“I’m impressed with the people the school district has brought in to manage and design the project. The taxpayers are getting their money’s worth and more with the construction of Cherryland Elementary,” said Larry Ratto, a member of the district’s Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC) and former principal of Sunset High School. The CBOC is charged with monitoring all district projects and expenditures for bond programs approved by voters.

The current Cherryland Elementary School, located nearby, serves approximately 745 students. The new facility is expected to serve over 850 students and their families. The construction and renovation of facilities across our district share the goal of creating joyful and safe environments for students to learn and thrive. The Hayward Unified School District is focused on nurturing relationship-centered schools that welcome families and community partners into its schools to serve students’ full range of needs.

“As a full service community school, it was important to ensure that the new Cherryland Elementary School could provide two different service areas: parent-based services and direct services for students,” stated Dr. Annette Walker, the district’s school board president.

For families that may find it too burdensome to get across town to access vital resources, the school will be able to offer office space for agencies that can come to the school to provide their services on site. Direct services for students may include dental care and therapy, among others. The school’s design will allow for greater collaboration with county and community agencies. Another unique feature of the school’s design is the shared spaces for collaborative teaching and learning. Classrooms for similar grade levels will have shared “flex” spaces for students to collaborate and a central space for teachers to work across different programs.

The project is being constructed by BHM Construction, Inc. and managed by Vanir Construction Management, Inc. “I’ve been involved in projects all over the state and this is the nicest elementary school we’ve ever built, and that’s saying a lot,” said Jeff Mazet, owner of BHM Construction.

About Measure L

In November of 2014, Hayward voters approved Measure L by a vote of 77%. The vote authorized the issuance of $229M in bonding authority for the construction, modernization, and upgrades of schools. Several projects across the district are in different phases of design and construction as a result of this funding. These include new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) buildings that will support an interdisciplinary project-based curriculum in partnership with Cal State East Bay. During the previous school year, HUSD was proud to have completed construction on new athletic fields at our three traditional high schools. All three projects were also funded by Measure L.
