Superintendent's Office

Chien Wu-Fernandez is a community advocate and a committed educator. She is passionate about creating quality education in learning environments that are bias-free, inclusive, equitable, compassionate, and engaging. Chien is a collaborative leader and believes in the collective power of a community to transform organizations and affect change.  She is deeply committed to Hayward Unified and appreciates the strength and diversity of our community. She is excited and ready to continue to work alongside the outstanding educators, the dedicated parents, and the committed community partners in Hayward to both build on the good work that has been done and elevate the district to new heights. 

Chien has a career of more than 25 years in education. She assumed various roles in her career including classroom tutor, counselor, site program administrator, and district administrator. Over the last 17 years, she has dedicated herself to serving the students and families in Hayward Unified. She has served in different leadership positions including the Associate Superintendent of Student and Family Services.

During her time in Hayward, Chien has focused her efforts on creating access to students and families and building structures to better serve our students. These efforts included the expansion of after-school programs, the expansion of mental health supports, the increase in health services, the development of our parent engagement strategies, and increased services for our newcomer students. She is also leading the efforts to create policy and implement key strategies on inclusive practices, social-emotional learning, and restorative practices. 

Chien received her undergraduate degree from U.C. Berkeley with a major in Psychology and minor in Education and a Masters of Social Work degree with an emphasis in schools from San Jose State University. She has also completed the program in Early Childhood Education and Preschoolers with Disabilities.
